Queensland Pool Safety Inspection Checklist

Use this quick checklist to see if your pool barrier is likely to meet Queensland safety standards before booking your inspection.

✅ Pool Fence & Barrier

• Fence is at least 1200mm high from finished ground level

• No climbable objects within 900mm of the outside of the fence (e.g. furniture, pot plants, BBQs)

• No climbable objects within 300mm of the inside of the fence (e.g. furniture, pot plants, BBQs)

• Gaps in fence are no larger than 100mm

• Vertical bars are spaced less than 100mm apart

• Horizontal rails are positioned to prevent climbing

• All pool fence panels must be firmly secured to the posts.

• All pool fence posts must be firmly secured to the ground.

• If you have a patio, deck, pergola or balcony within the pool area, you must have one side permanently open so you can clearly see and supervise young children in the pool.

✅ Pool Gates

• Gate opens outwards (away from the pool)

• Gate is self-closing from any position

• Gate is self-latching every time it closes

• Latch is at least 1500mm high, or shielded if lower

• Gate is not propped open or obstructed

✅ CPR Signage

• A compliant CPR sign is clearly visible from the pool area

• Sign is in good condition and legible

✅ Doors & Windows (if applicable)

• Doors do not provide direct access to the pool area

• Windows opening into pool area are:

• Restricted to 100mm opening, or

• Fitted with compliant security screens, or

• At least 1200mm high from finished ground level

✅ General Safety

• Pool area is well maintained and free from hazards

• No sharp edges, broken fencing, or loose fixtures

⚠️ Common Reasons Pools Fail

• Gate not self-closing or self-latching

• Climbable objects near fence

• Incorrect latch height

• Gaps too large in fence or under fence

• No CPR sign, or old and damaged CPR sign
